May 12, 2023 (Brockville, ON) – When it comes to fundraising for The Terry Fox Foundation, Laggan Public School and Char-Lan District High School are leaders within the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB).

Each year, the UCDSB presents two schools – one elementary and one secondary – with the Ted Kennedy Legacy Award for raising the most money per student for the Terry Fox Foundation. For this year’s fundraising, which took place in September 2022, Laggan PS and Char-Lan DHS were the recipients. Laggan raised $7,997 (approximately $38 per student) and Char-Lan raised $8,027 (approximately $23 per student), adding to the board total of $107,738 for 2022.

The UCDSB award was created in 2011 in honour of the late Ted Kennedy, a veteran superintendent and principal with the UCDSB who held Terry Fox and the foundation close to his heart.

Receiving this award has become a bit of a tradition at the schools. Both schools won the award last school year, with Laggan on the plaque now six times and Char-Lan nine times.

“Our fundraising success over the years is thanks to teacher Robyn Mohammed’s efforts. She lives and breathes Terry Fox,” says Laggan PS Principal Lianne Hughes, who had to be turned into a chocolate sundae at their school’s Terry Fox Run due to the school surpassing its fundraising goal.

Char-Lan was number 25 in all of Ontario based on total amount fundraised (not per capita) and the school received a personalized thank you letter from the Fox family. “We’re a small school with a big heart and a very supportive community,” says organizing Teacher Heather Grant. “Some students raised hundreds of dollars on their own and we even received some international donations from Italy.”

The UCDSB has raised over $1.8 million to date for the Terry Fox Foundation.
